Bowen set up a clinic in Geelong, Victoria, where by 1975 he was reported to treat 13,000 people a year, with an 88% success rate. NST, or Neurostructural Integration Technique, was developed from a later version of Bowen’s work. NST is quicker and smoother in its application and consistently achieves amazing results in more difficult cases. A Bowen treatment involves gentle rolling moves over muscles, ligaments and tendons. The technique is unique in that there are short breaks between sets of moves and the physical input from the therapist is minimal (there is no hard or forced manipulation). The Bowen Technique prompts the body to reset, repair and rebalance itself on a physical and chemical level. Clients report pain relief, improvement of function and recovery of energy. How Does it Work? There are many theories, and one can not be certain, but it is thought that the moves trigger electrical impulses to the brain, and effectively set up communication between the brain and the body, prompting the body to detect imbalances, and begin to correct them. Compared to other treatments, the Bowen technique provides longer lasting relief because rather than relying on the therapist to ‘make’ the body change, it prompts the body to recognise the changes required and gives it time to make the changes itself. The last Bowen Back Pain project suggested that almost 90% of Bowen treatments can result in either complete or partial recovery. Muscular skeletal problems respond exceptionably well, and respiratory, digestive, hormonal and organic problems can be addressed too. In fact almost everything can be addressed with Bowen. Bowen and pregnancy The advantage of Bowen is that pregnant women can be treated either sitting or lying on their side cushioned with pillows. Bowen is extremely effective for the problems associated with pregnancy such as: ? Backache ? Sciatica ? Hip, pelvic and pubic pain and SPD ? Aching and swelling ? Headaches ? Fatigue ? Nausea ? Anxiety ? Heartburn ? Constipation ? Breathing difficulties Leading up the birth, Bowen can help with optimal foetal positioning. It will help the body prepare for labour for example by balancing the pelvis and relaxing the muscles of the spine and pelvic floor, and as a result assist a more straightforward and comfortable delivery. After birth Bowen can speed up the recovery process, bring balance back and help restore the body’s natural equilibrium. Bowen for babies Birth can be an incredibly intense experience for babies. The baby’s head and body are subject to massive compressive forces, and after they are born their digestive and respiratory systems have to adapt and function. Babies can be treated just days after birth, either in their mother’s arms or lying/sitting playing. Only a very light treatment is needed. Bowen can be very effective for: ? Birth trauma ? Neck restrictions ? Head compression ? Sleeping or feeding difficulties ? Respiratory problems ? Digestive problems including colic and constipation ? Problems settling ? Difficulties sitting, crawling or walking Bowen and sports Bowen and NST are becoming increasingly popular in the sporting world because of their immediate results and limited necessity of treatments. Knee and ankle injuries, swellings, back pain, hamstring injuries, shoulder problems, pulled muscles, strained ligaments all respond extremely well, and tests have shown accelerated rates of recovery with Bowen treatment. Regular treatments can also be used as a preventative measure, and enhance sporting performance by increasing energy levels, improving flexibility, mobility and co-ordination as well as reducing the incidence of injury. Please note, Bowen is not a substitute for medical advice, if you have any doubts or concerns please consult your GP first. Email REFER A FRIEND AND RECIEVE £10 CREDIT BOOK 4 APPOINTMENTS AND RECIEVE £10 CREDIT Treatments A typical appointment is an hour long. Before your first appointment you will be asked about your medical history, including any medication you are taking. Treatments will be carried out on a massage couch. The technique is more effective when the moves are made direct on skin so modest underwear is recommended, or if clients prefer they may wear loose, thin clothing (no jeans, thick jumpers etc). Small rolling moves are made with fingers and thumbs over soft tissue at precise points of the body, with small breaks between sets of moves, during which the therapist will often leave the room for a couple of minutes. These breaks are a vital part of the treatment as they allow your body to absorb and react to the moves. Please be aware that breaks will occur and that they are completely normal. An initial set of three treatments is recommended, usually a week apart. However there are no hard and fast rules - some people require further or ongoing treatments. Either way it is recommended that clients return for regular treatments every six to eight weeks or so to maintain optimum health. We ask that you refrain from any other therapy such as massage, osteopathy, physiotherapy for 7 days either side of your treatments. The only exception to this is homeopathy. Essential self-help Consider water intake (2 litres a day), diet (a balance of 80/20 alkaline/acid) and exercise (20 minutes daily). Drinking water is an important part of Bowen. Many problems are exacerbated by dehydration and increasing water intake alone can lessen symptoms. After a Bowen treatment your body will start eliminating toxins, water is needed for this so drinking more will help with your response (Aim for 2 litres a day minimum) Walking too can help (aim for at least 20 minutes each day). On the day of treatment avoid sitting still for more than half an hour at a time. Get up and move around if only for a few seconds. It is also important to consider diet. A more alkaline diet is recommended for a vast range of conditions. This issue of acid and alkalinity is a particularly hot topic when it comes to conditions like cancer and arthritis. Aim for an 80% alkaline to 20% acid forming diet. As a general rule, foods like red meat, refined foods and drinks are acid forming, and most fruit and vegetables are alkaline forming.
